I Think the Genre Has Changed 4

Possession (4)

“I believe all of you already know what Mir Military is.”

No, I don’t.

“And so, all of you who have entered the strongest high school must have been waiting for this very moment.”

No, we haven’t.

“Now then, we will begin the class test for the incoming freshmen!”

“Waaaah—!”

“……”

If he had to describe how he felt right now, it would be like a foreigner who unknowingly wandered into a neighboring country’s festival. Excited cheers from students echoed all around, lively chatter filling the air—yet he alone stood there in silence. Feeling awkward, Sihyeon quickly pulled out his phone and searched “Mir Military” on the green window (Naver).

When you don’t know something, you search it on the green window—that’s what people say.

The moment he hit search, thousands of articles flooded the screen. Whatever it was, it seemed like a pretty famous organization.

[Mir Military’s ‘Lee Hayeok’ single-handedly subjugates a disaster-level Irregular. Ranked as the 7th S-class Ranker globally, and the 2nd in Korea]

[Incheon suddenly attacked by an Irregular, lives saved thanks to Mir Military’s timely arrival…]

[Multiple ‘danger-level Irregulars’ appear off the U.S. coast, total of 1,300 deaths. U.S. citizens complain that the IRS responded slower than ‘Mir Military’]

[Emergence of a new Irregular—‘Mir Military Headquarters’ designates it as a ‘warning-level’…]

“……”

He didn’t understand a single word. What’s a disaster-level? What’s an Irregular? And what the hell is an S-class? These were completely unfamiliar terms—nothing like what you’d see in a typical internet novel.

He thought he’d ended up in a normal web novel with school bullies and some global rank #0 nonsense, but <This Kind of Ending> apparently had a much grander world-building than expected. No wonder his older sister Yoo Sian had been making such a fuss, saying it was fun—she’d never be satisfied with anything ordinary.

Feeling like he’d just been hit on the back of the head, Sihyeon steadied his confusion and carefully organized his thoughts.

So, to summarize the basics: this world has things called Irregulars, and Mir Military seems to be some kind of special organization that fights against them… And this place is a school that trains those Mir Military members?

…No one told him any of this.

If anything, that only made it worse. Looking around with a baffled expression, Sihyeon checked his uniform again. The school emblem reading “Strongest” was blatantly stitched onto his vest. Any hope that he had simply come to the wrong school vanished instantly.

“…What kind of ridiculous situation is this?”

The web novel he possessed into is actually fantasy. Letting out a hollow laugh, Sihyeon bit his lip. These Irregulars were clearly dangerous beings. Even from the brief glance at the articles, he remembered the report of 1,300 deaths. That had to be the number of people killed by Irregulars.

How did things end up like this? What kind of sin did I commit in my past life to end up possessing a novel like this?

…Or maybe, if I just die right now, I might return to my original body.

Entertaining the vague thought for a moment, Sihyeon quickly snapped out of it and searched “class test” on his phone. There was still too much he didn’t know to just sit there in despair.

After a few loading spins, a blog post titled <Awakened Class Guide> appeared. He clicked it immediately. Right now, this was exactly what he needed.

[Explanation of Awakened Classes]

Hi hi.

I doubt there are idiots like this, but just in case there are still people who don’t know what an Awakened is, this post will briefly explain Awakened classes.

Let’s start with basic terms.

Awakened: Literally people who have awakened abilities. Apparently only about 7% of humanity. They say you can make a lot of money if you’re Awakened. Most awaken in their teens, and only after completing class engraving at a specialized training institution are they considered legit Awakened. Since class testers only exist at training institutions, Awakened people don’t even know their class until they get tested. Also, they can’t use their abilities before engraving—just a mark appears on their body. Anyway, these are the people who fight Irregulars so we’ve survived this long, got it?

Everyone already knows what Irregulars are, so I’ll move on to class explanations. I won’t cover everything, just the main ones. Skip what you want. Some of this is speculation.

1) Enhancement, Explosion, Control, Flight, and other single-skill abilities: These don’t even have proper class names. Exactly what they sound like, and since they only have one skill, most are D–E rank. Not really respected among Awakened. Apparently there are rare strong ones with single abilities, but I don’t know, so skipping.

2) Tanker: Pretty self-explanatory. High health and strength, takes hits for allies. Signature skill is Taunt. The rest depends on the individual.

3) Swordsman: Probably the class most affected by talent. Even among swordsmen, skill varies wildly depending on talent and effort. Ranges from average C-rank to S-rank Awakened. Basically, if you’re meant to succeed, you will. Like Lee Hayeok, who became an S-rank Ranker. Skills you can learn also differ by talent, but I wouldn’t know since I’m not Awakened.

4) Archer: Uses bows, but honestly trash-tier since snipers exist. Agreed?

5) Elemental Ability Users: Fire, water, air, earth, lightning, etc. Among them, air-type users are apparently considered A-rank by default.

6) Sniper: Generally ranked higher than archers. They have exclusive skills, but snipers are secretive, so no one really knows. Also varies by talent.

7) Buffer: Can apply buffs and debuffs. Rare due to low compatibility, so they’re highly valued.

8) Healer: The true top-tier class, honestly. You all know this, right? Think of them as shield-generating healers. So rare that people say you can’t get healed because there aren’t any. Same rarity tier as buffers.

There are more, but these are the most basic and well-known ones. There are rumors the government hides certain classes, but that’s just speculation. Believe what you want.

Basically, each Awakened can only engrave one class, and everyone has a compatible class—but there are exceptions. These guys are basically broken characters. Born different from the start.

1) All-Rounder: Unlike others who only fit one class, they’re compatible with all classes and can choose whichever one they want. Still, they can only use one class, but it’s impressive. Very rare even among Awakened.

2) Dual Class: Same as All-Rounder, but can choose up to two classes. Basically means they use two abilities. Total overpowered. Only five in the world. Three are S-rank Rankers, so that tells you everything. The other two… had the class but not the talent. Guess God didn’t abandon us completely… Wait, they’re still A-rank, right? Yeah, God abandoned us.

3) Triple Class: All-Rounder + three abilities. Completely broken. Only one has ever existed. The No. 1 S-rank Ranker in the U.S. has this class. Need I say more?

All-Rounder classification is based on the abilities registered in the tester at the time of testing. So if a new class appears, the classification can change. In other words, if someone was an All-Rounder yesterday but a new class appears today that they’re incompatible with, they’re no longer an All-Rounder. The tester automatically assigns the most suitable class among compatible ones.

But new classes rarely appear now, so this probably won’t happen.

That’s it. Next time I’ll explain Irregulars. Bye.

“……”

After rapidly scanning the entire post with his blue eyes, Sihyeon stared at the screen with an ambiguous expression. Maybe it was because the post read so casually—like it was explaining game jobs—but none of this felt real.

He thought the most would be guns and special training, but abilities? Superpowers? Not once had that been mentioned in the character descriptions. Shouldn’t they have at least said something about abilities?

The web novel he possessed into is fantasy—and it even has supernatural powers.

Running a hand through his hair in frustration, Sihyeon leaned his head back against the wall as if collapsing. No matter what, the important thing right now was that this so-called class test, which was about to begin, would determine his class as well. Was that why class assignments hadn’t been posted?

His rolling gaze drifted toward the excited faces of the other students. Depending on what class you got, your treatment and how people looked at you would change.

He still didn’t fully understand what an Awakened was, but one thing was clear—if he wanted to live quietly and eventually return, it would be best to get a low-rank class like Enhancement or Control. Something ordinary. Something that wouldn’t make him stand out.

With an unconscious sense of desperation, he looked toward the stage. A teacher hurriedly carried something over and began calling out five freshmen’s names. It seemed the test was finally starting.

“Kim Cheolsu, Hong Gildong, Ahn Younghee, Nam Jihwa, Kim Miyoung.”

The five students whose names were called went up one by one and placed their hands on a round sphere that looked like a lie detector.

A few seconds after placing their hands on it, the black sphere turned green and began to glow brightly. The teacher observing the tester wrote something down on a sheet before announcing the result.

“Tanker!”

“Waaaah!”

Cheers and applause erupted from all around. It seemed customary to congratulate others no matter what class they got.

How many students had gone through the test like that? It was interesting at first, but after seeing the same thing repeated several times, Sihyeon grew bored. Stifling a yawn, he stared at the stage with dull eyes.

As he idly wondered when his turn would come, the twentieth student stepped down, and it was time to call the next group.

“Jung Dawoon, Yoo Seowoo, Lee Hamin, Baek Geonwoo, Kang Haeun.”

“Kyaaah—!”

They really call them out like that?

The other four names called alongside Dawoon were exactly the ones he only knew from information. Well—Yoo Seowoo was an exception, since they met this morning.

Anyway, since they were clearly the famous Four Heavenly Kings, Sihyeon straightened his posture and looked at the five students stepping forward. Dawoon walked confidently toward the tester without hesitation.

If it was Dawoon, she’d definitely get an extraordinary class. And the same went for the Four Heavenly Kings beside her. This group would probably draw the loudest cheers yet.

Expecting some ridiculous classes to appear, Sihyeon focused on Dawoon as she placed her hand on the tester. The black device remained still for a few seconds before glowing with a bright violet light—the color indicating an elemental ability user.

What element would it be?

His interest, long dead, flared back to life as he focused on the teacher’s lips. After checking the tester and writing something down, the teacher smiled brightly and announced:

“Air element!”

“Waaaah!”

Air meant at least A-rank. Recalling the blog’s explanation, Sihyeon clapped along dryly with the others and swallowed.

Voices of shock echoed everywhere—“Air? No way.” But Sihyeon already knew.

There were still four unusually striking figures left on that stage.

Slowly, Yoo Seowoo stepped forward.

The truly unbelievable part… was probably about to begin.

I transmigrated into the body of a supporting male lead in a web novel I had only read up to page 8. And not just any supporting character, but the female lead’s childhood friend. Since he didn’t seem to have much importance in the story anyway, I figured I’d just live quietly without getting involved with the main characters until I could return to my original world… “Welcome, everyone, to Mir Military Academy High School—the strongest high school!” A suspicious school, and the Four Heavenly Kings who keep getting entangled with me the more I try to avoid them. On top of that, a world setting where Irregulars and supernatural abilities exist. …For some reason, it feels like the genre of the web novel I knew has changed.   ***   Top 1: Ban Haru – Sihyeon’s partner and fellow Class A member. Severely lacking in social skills. Top 2: Lee Hamin – One of the Four Heavenly Kings, the rude one. An S-rank Dual, who keeps finding his gaze drawn to Sihyeon. Top 3: Yoo Seowoo – One of the Four Heavenly Kings, the kind one. One of the first among them to make contact with Sihyeon, and is trying hard to earn his favor. Top 4: Baek Geonwoo – One of the Four Heavenly Kings, the cold one. Quietly follows Sihyeon. Main Bottom: Kang Sihyeon (Yoo Sihyeon) – An unfortunate college student who ends up transmigrating into the body of a supporting male lead in a web novel he only read up to page 8. Quick to give up and used to enduring things. Though he is stressed by the sudden change in environment, once he realizes he can’t return, he begins living as Kang Sihyeon. When to Read: When you want a transmigration story into a web novel that hits the protagonist with unexpected twists.  Relatable Quote: “…I wish I were just crazy instead.”
