Welcome to Lee Woo Villa 1

Prologue.

Welcome to Lee Woo Villa

Ding-dong—

The doorbell of Lee Woo Villa, Unit 101, rang. Yiwoo, who had been anxiously pacing the room while glancing at his wristwatch, got up as if he had been waiting for this moment and headed toward the entrance. Without even asking who it was, he pressed the door lock button. The door creaked open, revealing a tall, unfamiliar man standing there, frowning slightly as he stared at Yiwoo. Yiwoo greeted him first with a bright smile.

“Hello. You’re here to see the place, right?”

“Yes. But… I heard the manager was older.”

The man’s suspicious gaze flicked over Yiwoo. Used to such looks, Yiwoo maintained his smile and introduced himself.

“I’m Jang Yiwoo, the son of Jang Seongwoo. I live here and manage the villa.”

Without waiting for a response, Yiwoo shook the clipboard he was holding, the papers inside rustling.

“You’re here for Unit 102, right? Let me show you around.”

Yiwoo stepped out to open the door wider, and the man took a step back. As they moved into the hallway and the door closed behind them, the lock clicked shut. The man followed Yiwoo toward Unit 102. Since it was a corridor-style villa, the doors were lined up side by side without facing each other. The windows above the hallway railing were open, offering a clear view outside.

Yiwoo lifted the cover of the door lock for Unit 102 and pressed the password, explaining as he did so.

“The door lock is muted by default, and the password is 101010. I set them all the same because I kept forgetting, so you’ll need to change it as soon as you move in. Everyone knows the current one. Oh, and you can adjust the sound settings to your preference.”

After entering the password and closing the lock cover, the lock clicked open without any melody. Yiwoo pushed the door wide and stepped aside, allowing the man to enter first. The man silently surveyed the empty room as he stepped inside. Yiwoo followed, slipping off his shoes and continuing his explanation.

“It’s bigger than you’d expect, right? There’s only one room, but it’s much better than a studio for living alone. The subway station is close, and there are plenty of convenience facilities, so most residents here live alone.”

The man strode toward the small room. Creak—the old hinges groaned as he opened the door. Inside was just as empty. Hmm. The man made a small sound. Was that dissatisfaction? Yiwoo knew all too well that the only advantage of this villa, named after him, was its bright natural lighting. The fact that many single people lived here didn’t mean the place was ideal for solo living—it just meant the rent was affordable. Before the man could find something to complain about, Yiwoo quickly continued with another explanation.

“Since it’s a corridor-style villa, you’ll only have five neighbors at most, and it’s not inconvenient at all. Most of them are men living alone—working professionals or students—so it’s quiet. No one’s overly sensitive. As long as you follow the rules, everyone minds their own business. And even though the building is old, it’s well-built, so the soundproofing is good, which makes for better relationships. The resident in Unit 202 above is also quiet, so you won’t have to worry about noise between floors.”

The man, who had been staring at the ceiling, turned his gaze to Yiwoo. Meeting the man’s expressionless stare, Yiwoo laughed awkwardly. He had slightly altered the fact that almost every unit was occupied by men, but surely that was a minor detail.

“You seemed almost certain about moving in, so you like the place, right? We’ll be neighbors now.”

Neighbors. The man muttered softly and walked toward the wall. He clenched his fist and knocked firmly against it. Thud, thud. He knocked again in a different spot before turning toward the veranda. With a rattle, he slid open the large glass door and stepped onto the small veranda. Yiwoo continued talking from behind him.

“Having a veranda in a unit this size is a huge plus. The sunlight is great, so your laundry will dry quickly.”

The small veranda lacked even basic window framing, and there was no drain, so rain could easily flood it—but there was no need to mention that. The shops downstairs could get noisy at night, but that wasn’t something to bring up during the quiet daytime. Yiwoo just stood there, holding the clipboard and smiling silently.

After inspecting the veranda, the man moved to the bathroom. Yiwoo closed the veranda door with a click. The man turned on the light and looked around the bathroom. Yiwoo peeked in from behind and added another explanation.

“The bathroom is spacious for one person, right? The drainage is good, and there’s rarely been any trouble with the plumbing.”

It was true that the bathroom felt cramped if you tried to fit a washing machine inside, but most single men used the coin laundry down the alley, so there was no need to mention that. The plumbing had been fixed promptly after a few issues, so it was rare enough to call it “rare.” The man turned on the sink faucet to check the water pressure, then flushed the toilet before turning off the light and stepping out. Why so thorough? Yiwoo thought, but he kept smiling and asked,

“Did you check everything? It’s a good place, right?”

“The rooftop is supposed to be shared, right?”

The man, whose words had grown slightly curt, ignored Yiwoo’s question and only brought up what he wanted to say. He did look older than Yiwoo, but the sudden informality in his speech wasn’t exactly pleasant. Still, Yiwoo laughed it off. He’s a customer. Since Yiwoo received an allowance from his father based on the number of occupied units, he just smiled. Unit 102 had been vacant for a while, so he couldn’t afford to lose this potential tenant.

Yiwoo put on his slippers and opened the front door first, holding it as he waited for the man to come out. The man slowly stepped out, and Yiwoo closed the door with a bang. The lock clicked shut, still without any melody.

“The rooftop is this way. As you saw, the villa’s staircase is only on the side of Unit 1. The residents in Unit 5 find it a bit inconvenient, but Unit 102 is fine—you won’t even need the stairs.”

Unlike other buildings, the entrance to Lee Woo Villa was not in the center but attached to the side of Unit 101. The staircase that continued from there was an open external stairway without windows. It could get slippery when it rained, but there was no need to warn the man, who was planning to move in on the first floor. He wouldn’t go up to the rooftop in the rain, would he? The sound of the silent man’s footsteps following him was unnerving, so Yiwoo opened his mouth again unnecessarily.

“Everyone on the second floor is a college student. Oh, except for Unit 205—they’re working, but anyway, everyone’s quiet. There’s never been any trouble with noise. They all live alone.”

The walls weren’t thin, but the resident in Unit 201 had once blasted movies so loudly that the sound traveled through the walls, leading to a huge fight with Unit 202. But since then, they seemed to use headphones, so it was as good as no trouble. Unit 203 could be a bit noisy with thuds, but that was an issue for the tenant in Unit 103, not this man moving into Unit 102.

Just as they passed the third floor, thud! The doors of Units 303 and 305 slammed shut simultaneously. Those were the units where the eccentric twin brothers lived separately. Did they fight again? They usually didn’t interact much, but when they did fight, it was annoyingly intense. Yiwoo sighed softly as he climbed to the fourth floor, suddenly aware of the man’s taciturn presence behind him. He needed to break this long silence. Noticing the pile of packages outside Unit 405 at the end of the hallway—the unit that received an unusual number of deliveries—Yiwoo brought up the topic of packages.

“Oh, right, I’m a student too, so I can’t guarantee I’ll be home during the day to receive packages. You’ll have to get them delivered to your workplace.”

Throughout Yiwoo’s long explanation, the man hadn’t responded once. It was a little frustrating, but all that mattered was getting the unit occupied. Yiwoo forced himself not to take it personally and maintained his smile as he opened the door to the rooftop. Clank, creak—the metal door groaned open, revealing the wide-open rooftop to Yiwoo and the man. Yiwoo stepped through first, and the man followed. In the center of the long rooftop was a large, flat platform. A few chairs were scattered around, and a large can, presumably used as an ashtray, was visible. What stood out the most were the small flowerpots lined up in the corner.

“You can sunbathe here, eat, or do whatever you like on the platform, as long as you clean up afterward. A lot of people smoke up here, so if you smoke, feel free to use the rooftop. That big can over there is the ashtray. Try not to hang laundry here—do it on your veranda. The smoke smell lingers.”

The man walked over to the row of flowerpots, examining them. Yiwoo followed and stood beside him.

“These flowerpots…”

“I take care of them. Aren’t they pretty?”

But silence followed again. This time, the smile didn’t fade from Yiwoo’s lips, but a small crease formed between his brows. Patience. Just bear with it. As Yiwoo was steeling himself, the man, still looking at the flowerpots, finally spoke.

“I’ll move in next weekend.”

At the man’s blunt words, the crease between Yiwoo’s brows smoothed out. The man’s gaze, which had been on the flowerpots, slowly lifted to meet Yiwoo’s. Whatever that gaze held, Yiwoo only thought of the increased income and smiled brightly.
