The Guide Life of a Retired Special Agent 55

I froze in place, staring at Kang Biso, completely caught off guard by his sudden appearance.

His presence was downright menacing—it wouldn’t have been the least bit strange if he charged at us then and there.

“Kang Biso-ssi… What brings you here?”

“….”

I asked carefully, hoping to diffuse the tension, but he didn’t respond. His piercing gaze was locked onto my hand.

Only then did I realize—I was still holding Kim Seong-gyeong’s arm.

Startled, I quickly let go and tried again.

“Is there something you need, or…”

“…Hyung, what the hell are you doing with that bastard?”

That bastard?

The sudden insult came out of nowhere, leaving me stunned. Instinctively, I glanced at Kim Seong-gyeong—and sure enough, his face was twisted in displeasure, clearly offended by the crude remark.

What am I supposed to do…

I had no idea how to handle this.

Anxiously, I looked between the two of them. Then, to my surprise, Kim Seong-gyeong—who’d been quietly standing behind me until now—stepped forward and spoke in a calm, composed tone.

“My name is Kim Seong-gyeong, not ‘that bastard.’ I had dinner with Seol-bin-ssi. Is there a problem?”

“…Dinner? Why the hell would Hyung eat with you?”

“What does it matter to you? And honestly, I don’t see why we need to explain ourselves to you.”

“…You don’t think you need to?”

At that, Kang Biso clenched his jaw. His fists tightened, veins bulging along his knuckles. The tension was so thick it was suffocating—but Kim Seong-gyeong didn’t even flinch.

“Yes. Why should we have to? I’ve heard about you, Kang Biso-ssi. You’re the younger brother Seol-bin-ssi cares about.”

“…….”

“You’ve always said you’re just like siblings. So why are you this angry? I honestly don’t get it.”

“Hah…!”

Kang Biso let out a short, mocking laugh.

And I… I was stunned.

I never imagined Kim Seong-gyeong could be like this.

Up until now, he’d always been sweet, polite, the kind of guy who smiled brightly every time we met.

But now, seeing him so cold and confrontational—it completely threw me.

His tone wasn’t loud, but his words were pointed, just sharp enough to provoke. I started to worry that this could spiral into an actual fight.

Looking between the two, it was obvious Kang Biso was seconds away from snapping.

And Kim Seong-gyeong? He looked like he was just daring him to try.

Two grown men, glaring each other down in the middle of a darkened street… I had no idea how to fix this.

This is insane…

All I’d wanted was a peaceful night. I was going to calm them down and send them home separately.

Now, forget that—at this rate, the Guide Center and the dormitory would both be reduced to rubble.

What were they even fighting over? It wasn’t that deep!

I couldn’t take it anymore. I stepped in between them.

“Kim Seong-gyeong-ssi, it’s late. You should head home.”

“But Seol-bin-ssi…”

He looked genuinely disappointed, his expression sinking at my unexpected words.

“I need to talk to Kang Biso-ssi. Just the two of us.”

“Still… are you sure you’ll be okay?”

Who was even worried about who right now?

Even though all of Kang Biso’s hostility was aimed at him, Kim Seong-gyeong was still worried about me.

…If you really want to help, then leaving is the best thing you can do.

If he stuck around, it would only pour fuel on the fire.

For now, separating them was the smartest move.

“I’ll be fine. And… thank you. For tonight.”

When I nodded again, Kim Seong-gyeong glanced between me and Kang Biso, then let out a short sigh—as if accepting the situation.

“…Alright. I’ll do as you say, Seol-bin-ssi.”

“…Yeah.”

“Um… before I go, can I give you my number?”

“Huh? Your number?”

“I’m still worried. I thought maybe… if anything happens, you could call me.”

The murderous aura radiating from Kang Biso spiked even higher.

But Kim Seong-gyeong didn’t back down. He kept his eyes locked on me, waiting patiently for an answer.

Step—

The moment Kang Biso stepped forward, I quickly shook my head.

“Not tonight… I’ll reach out through the Center next time.”

“……”

Kim Seong-gyeong didn’t say a word. He stood there in silence, and the tension stretched so tight it felt like my insides were burning.

“…Alright. Please contact me, for real.”

He finally broke his silence with a nod, bowed politely, then shot one last glare at Kang Biso. After that, his shoulders slumped, and he turned to leave—looking completely deflated as he disappeared into the night.

Once he was gone, it was just me and Kang Biso left, standing in the empty street.

He was still silent, but that sharp, violent aura he’d been radiating earlier had faded.

Instead, he just stood there, his expression stiff—none of the usual warmth in sight—eyes locked onto mine like he was trying to drill into my thoughts.

This had to be…

Jealousy.

He was jealous because I was with Kim Seong-gyeong, right?

That’s why he got so angry. Why he stared at him like he wanted to tear him apart. Why his face twisted in a way I’d never seen before.

…This is insane.

The moment I made that connection, my heart started racing—so hard I could feel it pulsing in my fingertips.

I had to force myself not to smile. My lips twitched, trembling with the effort.

No. This is not the time. Kang Biso’s mad.

I tried to steady myself, taking deep breaths, but the more I tried to calm down, the harder my heart pounded.

I’d never felt anything this intense before. It was overwhelming—completely unfamiliar.

And then—

“Hyung.”

“Y-Yeah?”

I stammered like an idiot. I hadn’t expected him to speak first.

“…Are we really just like siblings?”

“……”

“…Is that all our relationship is?”

His voice was soft, almost fragile.

There was so much hurt in it, like he was holding back tears.

I wanted to say something. Anything. But the words just wouldn’t come.

…I don’t know anymore.

His question threw everything into chaos.

Was what I felt for him really just the affection between close friends?

No… it was definitely something else. Something more.

But I couldn’t give him an answer. Not yet.

And as I hesitated, I saw the disappointment spread across his face.

“All the time we’ve spent together… did none of it mean anything to you? Were you really just… indifferent?”

“……”

“Not even once… not even once have you liked me, even a little?”

His eyes shimmered as they met mine, and I instinctively shrank under the weight of his gaze.

“I…”

“It’s fine.”

He cut me off before I could say anything, shaking his head. The softness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a sharper edge.

“You don’t have to say anything.”

His head dropped, and he bit down hard on his bottom lip, like he was trying to hold himself together.

“……”

A heavy silence settled between us.

The sharp tension from earlier was gone, replaced by something quieter—something far more painful.

When he finally looked up again, his expression was like that of a wounded animal.

“Hyung… you’re really popular, huh.”

“…What?”

“I mean, Kim Seong-gyeong, and then that white-haired guy at the hotel…”

White hair—he meant Baek Beom.

But how did he know about Baek Beom?

“I saw it on the hotel CCTV. Saw a man coming out of your room.”

“……”

I was too stunned to even be mad. And honestly, now wasn’t the time to argue about him checking security footage.

“Are you living with him? What’s going on between you two?”

“…There’s nothing going on.”

“Then who the hell is he?”

“That’s…”

Was it okay to tell the truth?

That I’d originally planned to kill him, but ended up not doing it because he acted like a puppy and now we just… live together?

Yeah, no. There’s no way Kang Biso would just nod and move on from that. But why did I even owe him that explanation? What were we, exactly?

Kang Biso stepped closer, grabbing my arm gently.

His voice was low, quiet—but every word soaked into my skin.

“…I hate seeing you with someone else. I told you before—I get jealous. Just knowing you’re sharing space with another person drives me crazy. I want to lock you away somewhere only I can find you, so only I get to see you.”

Every single word clung to me like humidity in the summer—thick, heavy, impossible to ignore.

His eyes, filled with raw emotion, stared deep into mine like he wanted to see every corner of my heart.

“What do I have to do to make you mine? What would it take for you to feel the same way? I want you to look only at me. Stay by my side. Would that be so bad…?”

His gaze, his voice, his trembling hands—everything about him was overwhelming.

I should have said something, but I couldn’t. My lips moved, but no words came.

Maybe he didn’t expect a response. He didn’t look away. He just kept staring, like my silence was enough.

My whole body buzzed with the intensity of it.

No—this wasn’t just in my head. That look in his eyes… It was love. Plain and desperate and uncontainable. Overflowing past the edges.

I couldn’t look away. And then, just like before, my heart started pounding again—so hard I thought it might burst.

…Why does my heart keep doing this tonight?

And out of nowhere, memories from my days as a Special Agent came rushing back. Back then, I had to suppress everything—every emotion, every reaction.

I’d seen teammates get hurt. I’d seen children die in the field. In that line of work, showing emotion could get you killed. You had to make cold, rational decisions. Always. No matter how cruel. Just one misplaced feeling—one hesitation—and people died.

So I erased it all. And for a while, it was easier. But now… I didn’t know what to do with this. This kind of emotion, this kind of pounding in my chest—it was foreign, unfamiliar, terrifying. And yet, there he was, looking at me with eyes that practically screamed his heart out.

“…I like you. Since the first time I saw you. I like you so much… it’s driving me insane.”

His confession was raw—each word drenched in feeling.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

His voice echoed in my head, waking up feelings I didn’t even know were there. Right now, in this moment… I felt like I was falling under his spell.

“I love you. I don’t want to be just like brothers anymore. Please…be my boyfriend.”
