The moment these words were spoken, the atmosphere in the room froze for several seconds. Uncle Pei’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head as he snapped, “So what if he’s yours? He still carries the Pei name!”
Shen Yuqing merely replied lazily, “If he’s mine, then what’s his is mine. I’m calling you ‘Uncle’ now out of courtesy, but I’m sure you’ve heard I’m not exactly known for my manners, and I particularly despise alphas.”
He flashed Uncle Pei a faint smile and asked, “Tell me, if you were suddenly ambushed on your way home, beaten black and blue in a sack, do you think the Pei family would stand up for you?”
No, they wouldn’t. Not only that, he’d become the laughingstock of the entire family.
Uncle Pei took a deep breath, but the most infuriating part was that Shen Yuqing was absolutely capable of doing exactly that.
That was precisely why he had chosen to come today knowing Shen Yuqing was at the academy, he had hoped to avoid a direct confrontation. Yet somehow, Shen Yuqing had appeared out of nowhere again.
Standing by the hospital bed with his arms crossed and lips pressed tightly together, Shen Yuqing radiated displeasure.
Uncle Pei glanced at Pei Yiyan lying on the bed. Those five percent of shares were crucial to him. Despite recently acquiring scattered shares, it still wasn’t enough to make a difference.
When the board meeting came, he wouldn’t even have a single vote to cast. And this wasn’t just about the meeting it was about his future control of the company. He wanted power.
After a moment of cold calculation, Uncle Pei lowered his head, brushing off the footprints on his clothes. When he looked up again, his face was plastered with a warm smile. “Yuqing, you really do have a way with jokes.”
Shen Yuqing chuckled darkly. “Oh? I think so too. And the best part is, my jokes tend to come true.”
Ignoring the latter half of his words, Uncle Pei adjusted his collar and motioned for the two alphas to leave.
Only after the door clicked shut did Uncle Pei speak again. “Those five percent of shares are truly important to me. Yiyan, you know as well as I do that our company is already on the decline. In your current state, what use do you have holding onto them? If you think the offer is too low, we can discuss the terms further.”
Shen Yuqing glanced at Pei Yiyan. In the original plot, these five percent had been forcibly taken but now, thanks to his interference, that hadn’t happened.
Pei Yiyan remained silent, lying motionless on the bed.
Unable to gauge his thoughts, Shen Yuqing finally said, “If there’s nothing else, you can leave.”
Uncle Pei’s gaze flickered between the two of them before he finally stormed out, his expression grim.
The moment they were gone, Xiao Zhao rushed in with medicine, frantic after being blocked outside earlier. “I’m sorry, Young Master. I didn’t expect them to come.”
Shen Yuqing waved it off. “Not your fault. Go buy me a bottle of water.”
Understanding the dismissal, Xiao Zhao set the medicine down and left.
Once again, only the two of them remained in the room.
Shen Yuqing flopped into a chair with a heavy sigh.
He was exhausted.
Why did dealing with Pei Yiyan’s plotlines always feel like running a marathon?
Pei Yiyan watched as Shen Yuqing sprawled inelegantly in the chair, clearly drained.
He had been observing Shen Yuqing the entire time every word sharp, yet all of it spoken in his defense.
This idea was truly novel.
Shen Yuqing took a moment to collect himself, finally regaining his composure. He took a deep breath, picked up the tablet that had been casually tossed onto the quilt, and reached out to grab Pei Yiyan’s wrist to put it on him.
But the moment his fingers touched Pei Yiyan’s wrist, the latter seized his hand first.
Shen Yuqing looked at him and said, “Putting the tablet on you.”
Only after he spoke did Pei Yiyan seem to locate his position, his gaze shifting toward him.
Pei Yiyan asked, “Don’t you have class today?”
Shen Yuqing pulled his hand free. “Skipped it. Got a problem?”
He swiftly fastened the tablet onto Pei Yiyan. “Your eyes might be blind, but did your mouth go mute too? Couldn’t even call for help? If I hadn’t dropped by on a whim today, you’d probably have been devoured without a trace left.”
He withdrew his hand, his eyes sweeping over Pei Yiyan’s head once more. “Want me to assign you a couple of bodyguards? So you don’t get bullied again.”
“No need,” Pei Yiyan finally replied. “Discharging tomorrow.”
Shen Yuqing nodded. “Fine, discharge then. Staying in this hospital day after day would drive anyone insane.”
As he spoke, he glanced at his watch. The first class was about to start if he hurried back now, he could still catch the second half.
The system couldn’t help but chime in: You’ve already skipped it, Host. Might as well skip the whole thing.
Shen Yuqing replied, I’d like to, but I’m afraid Song Wangzhuo might overthink it.
After all, he’d just declared his commitment to studying hard and improving every day. If he turned around and skipped class, what would Song Wangzhuo think?
Though he had left a note on his door before leaving hopefully, he’d seen it.
Shen Yuqing felt a headache coming on. He really had to rush back. Skipping one class was entirely different from skipping two.
He’d also need to come up with an excuse to explain things to Song Wangzhuo.
Pei Yiyan watched as Shen Yuqing fell into deep thought while staring at the tablet, his expression growing increasingly conflicted.
He couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
How had he never noticed before how expressive Shen Yuqing’s face could be?
After a moment of hesitation, Shen Yuqing finally made up his mind and stood up. “So boring. I’m leaving.”
He had another place to be.
Shen Yuqing stretched lazily. He was wearing a loose T-shirt today, and as he raised his arms, the fabric rode up, revealing a glimpse of his slender waist.
Pei Yiyan was caught off guard by the sight. He froze momentarily, but before long, Shen Yuqing lowered his arms, turned around, and grabbed his bag to leave.
“Shen Yuqing,” Pei Yiyan called out involuntarily.
Shen Yuqing turned back. “What?”
Pei Yiyan asked, “Why?”
Shen Yuqing blurted out without thinking, “Why what?”
Only after speaking did he realize how familiar this scene felt.
Shen Yuqing thought wasn’t this exactly how Pei Yiyan had called out to him yesterday?
Pei Yiyan seemed to recall it as well, pressing his lips together in silence.
His confusion about Shen Yuqing had grown far too much these past two days.
Shen Yuqing waited patiently for a while. He actually understood what Pei Yiyan wanted to ask.
After some deliberation, he decided to offer an explanation proactively. “I am your fiancé, after all. No reason to let others bully you. Bullying you is the same as slapping me in the face, isn’t it?”
He was the top troublemaker of Silino!
Shen Yuqing was quite pleased with this answer. Taking advantage of Pei Yiyan’s blindness, he let his lips curl into a smirk, unable to suppress his delight.
Pei Yiyan was puzzled. What was he so happy about?
What a strange person.
