Chapter 14

Shen Yuqing, who didn’t have to get up early, finally had a good night’s sleep.

When he woke up, he glanced at Pei Yiyan, who still showed no sign of waking up. Shen Yuqing couldn’t help but feel a little envious. It must be nice not having to go to school or work—sleep as late as you want.

That reminded him of something. Last night, Shen Zhen had messaged him saying that both Pei Yiyan’s rehab instructor and academic tutor would be visiting today to get familiar with the new environment. Shen Yuqing was supposed to inform the servants, so they wouldn’t miss them at the door.

Even though Shen Zhen could’ve told the servants himself, he preferred making Shen Yuqing do it. Shen Yuqing didn’t understand why, but he still passed on the message.

After he spoke, one of the servants replied, “Young Master Shen, the Pei family is also sending a servant over today to take care of Young Master Pei’s daily needs and meals.”

Shen Yuqing nodded. “Got it. You guys take care of the arrangements.”

After settling everything, he quickly ate breakfast and headed out. It usually took ten minutes to walk from home to the academy’s gate, but the closer it got to class time, the tighter the schedule felt.

Once Shen Yuqing entered the school, he walked while adjusting his breathing and said to the system:

[From now on, you should wake me up in the morning.]

The system replied coldly:

[I’m a system, not an alarm clock.]

Shen Yuqing said:

[Don’t talk like that. You’re making me sad.]

The system glitched a bit.

Shen Yuqing added:

[Tongzi, you seem to have a lot of resentment toward me.]

Well, how could it not? Shen Yuqing had completely messed up a key plot point with his wild actions.

Shen Yuqing asked back:

[Then tell me, have their blackening levels dropped?]

The system stalled. Shen Yuqing said lazily:

[Xiao Jiu, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Understand?]

It was just an AI—it didn’t want to understand that much.

After exchanging a few jokes with the system, Shen Yuqing quickened his pace toward the Mech Department. But after only a few steps, he spotted Song Wangzhuo walking ahead of him, holding a stack of test papers.

The sun was strong today, and Song Wangzhuo was only wearing a white T-shirt. His arms were well-toned, and the veins in his forearms stood out clearly with each movement.

Shen Yuqing squeezed his own arm. Some things really couldn’t be forced. The male lead was the male lead for a reason.

After seeing Song Wangzhuo, Shen Yuqing slowed down. There were no plot points today, so there was no need to annoy him—besides, Song Wangzhuo probably didn’t want to see him anyway.

He waited until Song Wangzhuo entered the classroom before strolling in slowly. Just as he stepped into the room, the bell rang—perfect timing.

Seats in the classroom weren’t assigned. Shen Yuqing carried his bag to the back and sat down. As soon as he did, he noticed Song Wangzhuo sitting diagonally in front of him to the left—sitting upright like a model student.

Shen Yuqing lowered his head and took a deep breath, ready to focus on studying. But just then, a plot scene popped into his mind:

[Pei Yiyan unknowingly drank water that had been drugged, which caused his heat period to come early.
Even though his glands were damaged, his alpha instincts still kicked in. His gland teeth emerged, itching to bite something.
He crouched down and bit hard into his own arm in the dark, trying to stay conscious, until the wardrobe door creaked open.
Shen Yuqing stood at the door and sneered, “Oh? A blind man hiding in a closet?”
Pei Yiyan looked up, eyes red. He couldn’t see anything clearly and could only rely on voices to recognize people.
The drug made his mind foggy. The next moment, someone violently pulled him out of the closet.
He fell to the floor, and someone stepped hard on his back, pinning him down.
Shen Yuqing chuckled, “Didn’t Young Master Pei always act so pure? Why are you wagging your tail like a dog now?”
He nudged him with his foot. “So cheap.”
Pei Yiyan bit his lip hard. The pain gave him a brief moment of clarity, but it was soon swallowed up by the effects of the drug.
This constant back-and-forth torment pushed him to his mental limit.
His usually calm and quiet eyes were now bloodshot.
A dangerous and terrifying aura filled the room, but the beta behind him had no clue.
Shen Yuqing coldly watched, then squatted down beside him, grabbed his hair to force his head up, and lightly patted his face.
He whispered, “Let me help you.”
… (Lights off)]

Rip—Shen Yuqing’s pen tore across the page, leaving a long scratch in his notebook.

What the hell does “lights off” even mean?
Why such an explosive scene this early? Was this even allowed?

Compared to Shen Yuqing’s panic, the system remained calm:

[Host, this type of plot is normal. After all, the original Shen Yuqing wasn’t exactly cold. He enjoyed tormenting alphas. That ‘lights off’ part isn’t what you’re imagining.]

Shen Yuqing got it. The “lights off” part didn’t necessarily mean something steamy—it could’ve been cut because it was too intense for readers. The author might’ve just skipped the details to avoid corrupting young minds.

He sighed in relief:

[But what’s that “drug” in the water?]

The system replied:

[It was added by a servant from the Pei family. The Pei family knows the original Shen Yuqing and Pei Yiyan haven’t had any real physical contact, so they’re trying to speed things up between them. That servant was also sent to monitor Pei Yiyan.]

This morning, when Shen Yuqing heard the servant mention it, he had felt suspicious. After all, back when they were at the Shen house, the Pei family never sent any servant to take care of Pei Yiyan.

And wasn’t it said earlier that Pei Yiyan had no upcoming plot points? Why did something suddenly happen as soon as they moved out?

He asked the system. The system explained:

[It has to do with time flow. In novels, when nothing important is happening, time is often skipped. But now that we’re inside the story world, every minute and second is real.
In the original, Pei Yiyan never moved out of the Shen house with the host, so the plot was delayed.
But now, since you two moved out together and see each other daily, the plot naturally advanced.]

A kind of butterfly effect.

Shen Yuqing understood. Then he asked:

[So I won’t have to go through the same plot point again later, right?]

[No,] the system said. [The plot points might come earlier, but the total number of events is fixed.]

Shen Yuqing let out a breath. That was a relief.

But the Pei family’s servant had reminded him of something important—he needed to find a reason to kick that person out. He couldn’t have a time bomb living under the same roof. Today they drugged Pei Yiyan. Tomorrow, it could be him.

Biting his pen, Shen Yuqing started thinking of a plan. He didn’t even notice that when he scratched the page with his pen, Song Wangzhuo—sitting to his left in front—had turned around to glance at him.

Song Wangzhuo quickly looked away and focused on the professor’s lecture again. But his mind couldn’t help replaying Shen Yuqing’s expression just now—relaxed, gentle, and calm.

Totally different from the cold and sharp version of Shen Yuqing he had seen in his dreams.10
