Chapter 124

Shen Yuqing could no longer spare a thought for the man. He rushed to Song Wangzhuo, supporting him as he asked anxiously, “Are you okay?”

Song Wangzhuo wanted to shake his head, but his mind felt dizzy. He parted his lips weakly and murmured, “I’m fine.”

Shen Yuqing held him with one hand while shouting, “Doctor! Doctor! Check on Song Wangzhuo first!”

He helped Song Wangzhuo sit on the bed, pressing a hand against his bleeding wound.

Soon, the doctor hurried over, and a nurse brought the necessary tools. They prepared to administer emergency treatment to Song Wangzhuo.

Just then, the man took advantage of everyone’s attention being focused on Song Wangzhuo. With a sudden burst of strength, he threw off the security guards restraining him. His movements were too swift the guards were stunned for a few seconds. But in that brief moment, he pulled out a smaller fruit knife from his coat pocket and charged toward the hospital bed.

Yet, he still failed.

At the critical moment, Shen Yuqing reached out and grabbed his wrist. In the ensuing struggle, the security guards rushed forward again and subdued him once more.

Shen Yuqing’s chest heaved violently, his mind still reeling.

It had all been thanks to his body’s instinctive reaction and the system’s warning. Thank goodness. That had been too close.

“Shen Yuqing—”

[Host! Your arm!]

Song Wangzhuo’s voice and the system’s alert rang in his ears simultaneously. Only then did Shen Yuqing belatedly lower his gaze to his left arm blood was streaming down it.

He must have been cut during the chaos. The delayed pain struck the moment he saw the wound, making his face pale. He was about to suck in a sharp breath but then remembered something and forced himself to appear calm as he looked at Song Wangzhuo.

“I’m fine,” he said.

More security and medical staff poured into the room. The man was finally rendered incapable of causing any more harm, and Shen Yuqing finally let out a sigh of relief.

“Shen Yuqing.”

He heard Song Wangzhuo call his name again. Shen Yuqing turned to him and could tell that Song Wangzhuo was barely holding on. Before Shen Yuqing had arrived, his wound had already reopened, and he had exhausted all his strength trying to help. Now, his face was as pale as the walls around them he was on the verge of passing out.

Shen Yuqing reassured him, “It’s okay. The doctors are here. I’m fine, and you’ll be fine too. Just rest. When you wake up, everything will be resolved.”

But Song Wangzhuo stubbornly clung to consciousness. In the end, the doctor had to administer an inhaled anesthetic before he finally fell into a deep sleep.

“Emergency room, now!”

The ward was in chaos. Shen Yuqing was pulled aside by a nurse to receive emergency treatment for the wound on his arm.

Only after the bleeding was stopped and the blood wiped away did they realize the cut was actually quite deep.

He exhaled slowly as the pain in his arm shot through his nerves. But compared to that, he was more worried about how to explain this to Shen Zhen.

If he returned with this injury, Xiao Zhao would definitely report it to Shen Zhen, who would undoubtedly come to question him.

He asked, [Do you have any miracle medicine that can heal wounds quickly?]

[Host, no.] The system sounded pitiful. [You’ve suffered.]

Shen Yuqing wanted to reply, but the pain made him grimace. He turned to the nurse and said, “Excuse me, could you be a little gentler?” It really hurt.

The nurse quickly responded, “There’s no helping it. I’m being as gentle as I can.”

Shen Yuqing had no choice but to grit his teeth and bear it as the nurse treated his wound. Fortunately, she was very professional and had his arm bandaged in no time. She instructed, “Avoid cold water, and don’t eat anything spicy, raw, or seafood. Apply the medicine daily.”

Shen Yuqing nodded. “Got it.”

Then he asked, “Where’s the emergency room?”

The nurse gave him directions, and the caretaker returned shortly after, carrying groceries for dinner. But the moment he stepped in and saw the mess in the room, he nearly fainted.

Shen Yuqing said, “Don’t pass out yet. Song Wangzhuo is in the emergency room. Go keep him company and call the teacher to come over.”

His head was spinning a little, and he needed a moment to collect himself.

The caretaker hurriedly agreed, set down the groceries, and rushed to the emergency room.

The nurse said, “Rest for a while. I’ll have a doctor check on you before you leave.”

Shen Yuqing nodded and leaned back on the sofa to steady himself.

With everyone gone, the ward fell silent.

The system spoke up: [Host, who on earth is trying to kill Song Wangzhuo?!]

This wasn’t just a coincidence, it kept happening again and again!

Shen Yuqing lowered his gaze slightly, his temples throbbing. [Based on the story’s future developments, who would want Song Wangzhuo gone the most?]

The system replied: […The Song family.]

[Song Lejin.] Shen Yuqing’s expression darkened. [But neither of us can find any evidence against him. Even if we handed him over to the police, it’d probably end up like the last two incidents at the academy.]

Even with some leads, digging deeper still wouldn’t reveal the mastermind.

How exactly was Song Lejin pulling this off?

The wound on his arm still ached. Shen Yuqing raised his other hand and lightly touched the bandage.

And he seemed desperate.

If his suspicions were correct, Song Lejin’s attitude toward Song Wangzhuo hadn’t been this extreme at first he’d only caused minor trouble. So why was he now resorting to murder?

What had changed to push him to this point?

Shen Yuqing sighed, feeling a surge of frustration.

What was he missing?

Or rather, what had Song Lejin swallowed back that day?

Shen Yuqing got up and headed for the emergency room.

Where was the key to solving this?

By the time the homeroom teacher arrived, Song Wangzhuo had just been wheeled out of the emergency room. His wound had been properly treated, and though he was weak from blood loss, he wasn’t in critical condition.

Shen Yuqing finally relaxed.

The teacher also let out a sigh of relief and turned to Shen Yuqing. “How’s your arm?”

He’d already pieced together most of what had happened by the time he arrived.

Shen Yuqing replied, “It’s fine, just a cut. It’ll heal in a couple of days.”

The teacher frowned. “Go home and rest. I need to meet with the hospital administration.”

The hospital would have to provide an explanation for this incident, and everyone was feeling the pressure.

Shen Yuqing nodded. “Understood. I’ll wait until Song Wangzhuo wakes up before I leave.”

There was no way he’d be going to the academy that afternoon, but he didn’t want to go home too early either especially since he hadn’t come up with a good excuse yet.

Unable to help himself, Shen Yuqing sighed again and looked at Song Wangzhuo lying on the hospital bed. His face was still pale from the blood loss.

Now that things had spiraled completely out of control due to an unforeseen variable, Shen Yuqing suddenly had a bold idea.

Since that was the case, there was no need for him to follow the rules anymore.

Besides, he had never been one to play by the rules otherwise, he wouldn’t have gotten this far in the first place.

Shen Yuqing summoned the system and laid out his thoughts.

He had expected the system to once again turn into a screeching chicken, vehemently rejecting his proposal with righteous indignation.

He had even prepared counterarguments, but to his surprise, after listening, the system merely said quietly: 【Host, the system’s audio receiver just malfunctioned. But even without hearing, I know whatever you’re doing must have its reasons.】

Shen Yuqing understood the system supported him, but it was going to pretend ignorance.

Well, that worked too.
