Ex Sponsor 1

Prologue

“A… sponsor?”

A sponsorship proposal from his divorced ex-husband.

Cheong-yeon asked again to confirm if he had heard correctly. He was confused because it didn’t seem like something he would say.

“Once a week. Every Friday evening, you meet with me.”

Do-heon continued calmly. Cheong-yeon’s mind raced in alarm.

“Why would I need to be sponsored by you, Director?”

“Because I can get you cast in that drama. I can make you perform the script that came to you as a supporting role. As the lead, of course.”

Moon Do-heon, who even held the title of JT Electronics’ Executive Director, certainly knew what “sponsorship” meant. This was definitely not an innocent proposal.

But the question of why kept floating through Cheong-yeon’s mind. Throughout their marriage, sex between them had been unbearably dry.

Unless he had enjoyed Cheong-yeon’s stiff demeanor as he struggled with pain, Do-heon probably hadn’t found much pleasure in bed either. The noticeably low frequency of their intimacy proved this.

If sex wasn’t the goal, did he really just want to spend time with him? Now, of all times?

Given that Do-heon had continued to seek out Cheong-yeon even after their divorce, this explanation made some sense.

“…”

Honestly, it wasn’t a bad offer. No, it was more than beneficial. For someone like him, an unknown former idol turned actor, to land a leading role in a drama. Plus, his sponsor would be none other than the heir to the JT Group.

“Alright. As long as there’s no physical contact.”

After careful consideration, Cheong-yeon answered gravely. At this, Do-heon’s previously relaxed expression showed a slight crack.

“You don’t want to sleep with me anyway, right?”

“Why would you think I wouldn’t demand sex from you?”

Cheong-yeon’s eyes widened at his unexpected response.

“What?”

“Even though we’re divorced now, we were still legitimately married.”

“Then… that means…”

“Of course sex is included. Isn’t that the basic condition of sponsorship?”

He nearly dropped the cup he was holding. Cheong-yeon stared at Do-heon sitting across from him with eyes full of shock.

His ex-husband must have lost his mind.

Chapter 1

The door slid open without a knock. Either not hearing the sound or ignoring it, the doctor standing in front of the bed announced the diagnosis.

“Patient Yoo Cheong-yeon is suspected to be infertile due to excessive use of pheromone suppressants.”

Cheong-yeon, lying in the hospital bed wearing a patient gown, unconsciously swallowed hard.

Simultaneously, the woman who had just entered the room stopped in her tracks. Her white shoes froze just above the threshold.

That’s how shocking the word “infertile” was.

“What did you just say?”

Cheong-yeon questioned the diagnosis given to him.

“I regret to inform you that Patient Yoo Cheong-yeon should be considered essentially infertile…”

“Let’s redo the tests.”

Do-heon’s resolute voice cut off the doctor’s words. Cheong-yeon, who had frozen in place, turned toward his husband, Moon Do-heon, who was surprisingly calm.

Despite his spouse’s infertility diagnosis, Do-heon was as composed as if he were scheduling a routine health checkup.

His insensitivity drove Cheong-yeon into deeper despair.

“If that’s what you wish, Director, of course. When would you like to schedule the retest?”

“Right now.”

“Understood. I’ll have them clear the examination room. In the meantime, we’ll proceed with another blood draw.”

The doctor moved quickly according to Do-heon’s demands. Throughout this process, the opinion of Yoo Cheong-yeon, the patient and the person diagnosed with infertility, was not needed.

This was only natural, of course. Moon Do-heon was the son of Chairman Moon of the JT Group and the Executive Director of JT Electronics. Not many people could question the words of the heir to one of the top three conglomerates in the country.

Cheong-yeon listlessly offered his arm to the nurse who approached to draw blood. His arm was already red and bruised from multiple needle pricks.

Normally, having had enough of blood tests, all his nerves would have been focused on the sharp needle, but from the moment he heard the word “infertile,” nothing else registered.

Chills ran through his already weakened body, and his solar plexus ached. But Cheong-yeon had no right to refuse. As always, he quietly waited for the blood draw to finish, doing as his husband and guardian Do-heon instructed.

“Everyone except the guardian must leave the room.”

The doctor, belatedly noticing the woman at the door, cautioned her. The woman—Moon Do-heon’s cousin sister Moon Hee-jin—put on an exaggeratedly surprised expression.

“Oh my, I didn’t know. Do-heon, are you okay? It’s scary to hear that Cheong-yeon is infertile.”

“Wait outside.”

“This is what happens when you marry a Recessive Omega from a mediocre family. And one who failed as some kind of singer or whatever…”

“This isn’t the time for that discussion.”

Despite Moon Hee-jin’s provocation, Do-heon merely cut her off professionally without showing any agitation. However, both Cheong-yeon and Hee-jin could roughly guess how bitter he must feel inside. After all, Do-heon had wanted a child more than anyone.

To be more explicit, not in the sense of family, but a child who would play the “role” of solidifying Moon Do-heon’s position within the JT Group.

“Fine, fine. I’ll leave. I just came because I was worried. He suddenly collapsed during dinner. You think I came to eat him alive?”

Hee-jin grumbled. There was no trace of sympathy in her eyes as she looked Cheong-yeon up and down, with his skinny, pale face and arm being drawn for blood. Only curiosity and mockery sparkled in her gaze.

“Secretary Shim. Please escort Moon Hee-jin out of the hospital room.”

“Yes, Director.”

“I said I’m leaving. Why are you calling someone over? And what’s with calling me ‘Moon Hee-jin’? You really have such a personality.”

Click-clack. Hee-jin opened the door herself and left before Secretary Shim could approach.

Cheong-yeon shot a sharp glare at her retreating figure. That crazy woman is starting again. Normally, he would have cursed internally and ground his teeth, but now he didn’t even have the energy for extended resentment.

It was obvious what Hee-jin would say to the family members as soon as she left the hospital. By tomorrow, the news that Yoo Cheong-yeon was infertile would be spread widely among the people of JT.

What would happen then? They probably wouldn’t leave Cheong-yeon, a thorn in their side, alone. That’s why he was anxious. Would everything be alright?

Cheong-yeon rolled his eyes to look at Do-heon. His face still showed no emotion.

“…”

Gradually, his vision began to blur. Then his face became wet.

Cheong-yeon belatedly realized that he was crying.

“…”

“…”

The nurse moved quickly, and the doctor had left to check if the examination room was vacant. And Do-heon and Cheong-yeon remained silent.

The hospital room was as quiet as if nothing had happened. Only the occasional sound of Cheong-yeon’s sobbing could be heard.

Lonely, Cheong-yeon thought. Insanely lonely.

*

Knock, knock.

Despite hearing the knocking sound, Cheong-yeon didn’t move from the bed. He had lost even the will to open his mouth and make a sound.

When there was no answer, the door clicked open and an employee entered without permission.

“I’ve brought your meal.”

Along with the clattering of dishes on the tray came a cautious voice.

“Even if you don’t have an appetite, try to have at least a spoonful of porridge.”

Worried about Cheong-yeon, who hadn’t had even a sip of water since being discharged from the hospital yesterday, the kitchen staff had brought porridge.

Cheong-yeon, still covered with the blanket and not turning his head, barely opened his dried lips.

“In my room…”

“…”

“Please don’t let anyone in.”

“…”

With the sound of a suppressed sigh, there followed a suffocating silence. The employee placed the porridge on the bedside table and quietly left the bedroom.

Once alone again, the doctor’s words from yesterday floated in Cheong-yeon’s mind, precariously clear like a buoy on the sea.

‘The retest results also indicate infertility. Damaging some of an Omega’s functions is a common side effect that can occur when suppressants are overused. Recessive Omegas, in particular, are more vulnerable, so it’s necessary to strictly adhere to the dosage.’

When he heard that, it felt like his life was over. Because he had become completely useless to this house and to the man called Moon Do-heon. Even hanging from the edge of a cliff couldn’t be more desperate than this.

For the past few days, he’d been feeling unwell and often had indigestion, secretly hoping he might be pregnant. Even that small hope had been shattered.

What was Do-heon’s expression like when he heard the doctor’s opinion? He couldn’t see clearly because he was crying, but he seemed terribly rational and cold, as if listening to someone else’s story. As always.
