What Kind of Relationship (1)
Thump. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe due to the sensation of my heart dropping. Seeing the guy silently pouring out his sorrow while embracing me, my mind went blank. My hand, which had been patting his back, had long since fallen limp. I could hear people whispering around us, but that was it. I didn’t feel self-conscious or embarrassed, nor did I think about quickly leaving this place.
After realizing that Sa Hae-geon had discovered me, I initially thought it was a big problem, but that feeling was brief. I just felt sorry for Sa Hae-geon. Everything felt like it was my fault. Was this emotion stemming from the guilt of making a child cry?
Or was it because Sa Hae-geon’s body, which was holding me, was trembling fearfully, unlike a kidnapper? He reacted sensitively, as if interpreting any slight movement from me as an attempt to escape. Even when I shifted slightly because it was hard to breathe, Sa Hae-geon buried his face in my shoulder and held me tighter.
The murmuring around us started to grow louder. If we stayed like this, I thought we might end up on some community site with a title like “Love Bloomed in the Central Terminal Amidst a Gust,” so I had no choice but to try and persuade Sa Hae-geon.
“Hae-geon, let’s just let go of this for now…”
But as soon as I spoke, Sa Hae-geon clung to my pant leg. I was dumbfounded by this unbelievable scene, as if I were the protagonist of a drama. Whether he knew what I was thinking or not, Sa Hae-geon sniffled, his face reddened and wet with tears.
“How, *sniff*, how could you…”
The crying sound from a grown adult drew the attention of the people chattering around us.
“Hyung, *sob*… why… are you so… cold? Hyung…”
“Ha-Hae-geon.”
“It’s too much… How could you…”
“No, wait. Hae-geon, just get up for a moment, okay?”
When I tried to remove his hand gripping my pants, Sa Hae-geon held on so tightly that veins popped out on the back of his hand. Soon, he spoke with a voice full of certainty and betrayal.
“You’re going to leave me again, aren’t you? Now, *hic*, I can’t trust you anymore.”
“No…”
My mind went blank. Seeing his reddened nose, swollen eyes, and chin crumpled like a walnut shell full of sorrow, I couldn’t say anything. Unable to push away Sa Hae-geon, who was clutching my pant leg and sniffling, I endured it for a while. It took more than ten minutes before we could move to his car.
If, just if, our appearance had been photographed, I desperately hoped it wouldn’t be uploaded to a community site with some strange title.
Even after getting into the car, having barely contained his surging emotions, Sa Hae-geon remained silent for a long time. He buried his forehead in the backs of his hands on the steering wheel and quietly caught his breath. As the silence continued and Sa Hae-geon’s actions gradually became calmer, my heart grew heavier. I was scared.
Since he was a guy whose actions I could never predict, I couldn’t help but be deeply concerned about his reaction to this incident.
About ten minutes after getting in the car, Sa Hae-geon asked in a low, sunken voice.
“Do you dislike me?”
“…What?”
“Do you dislike me so much that you’d secretly run away when I’m not around?”
“That’s…”
“Is that why you asked how long it would take to get to your home, and what to do about the ankle monitor?”
Sa Hae-geon’s voice trembled slightly as he asked these questions. Although I had left Sa Hae-geon’s house for a legitimate reason, the more I heard him speak, the more I felt like a criminal. However, I didn’t want to just say things that sounded good. So I decided to be honest.
“I was planning to leave when the time was right. That’s what I’ve always done. Of course, with other Espers, I usually sent them away before I planned my escape.”
“Do you dislike being with me?”
“That’s not what I’m saying. I told you before, didn’t I? That I can’t stay in that house forever. It’s the same context.”
Sa Hae-geon’s hands gripped the steering wheel tightly at my firm response. Although I didn’t particularly want to say harsh things to such an innocent and tender-hearted guy, I had to make things clear.
“It’s because I’m the first Guide who performed your first Guiding. That’s why you’re developing an excessive attachment. Of course, I know you like me, but… is that a big enough reason to continue the confinement?”
“You…”
“It goes without saying, but I have no intention of living confined in your house for the rest of my life, Hae-geon. A short vacation, maybe. And the biggest reason I left your house is…”
Just as I was about to finish speaking, Sa Hae-geon, who had been slumped over the steering wheel, raised his upper body. He stared at me with a face that kept weakening my resolve, then abruptly turned his head away.
‘…Could he be sulking?’
His appearance looked so thoroughly upset that I couldn’t help but keep staring at his profile. Even though he must have felt my gaze, Sa Hae-geon showed no signs of embarrassment or discomfort as he simply started the car and drove. I was the only one questioning the naturally flowing situation.
“Where are you going?”
Sa Hae-geon’s lips quivered before pressing tightly shut again. He must be heading home. To think I’d be returning so easily to a place I had just managed to escape from. I fingered the crumpled ticket in my pocket while staring out the window. At some point, the gusty wind around the terminal had ceased.
